What is Autism?
Autism is a form of neurodivergence that affects communication, social interaction, sensory processing, and behaviour.
Every autistic person is unique: some may communicate nonverbally, others may have strong preferences for routine, or heightened sensory sensitivity. Autism is not something to “fix”; it’s a difference to be understood and supported.
Common Experiences of Autism
- Preference for structure and routine
- Sensory sensitivities (noise, light, touch, etc.)
- Differences in communication styles (verbal or nonverbal)
- Deep, focused interests
- Social interaction differences
Autism Across the Spectrum
Autism is often described as a spectrum because it presents differently in each individual. Some autistic people require daily support, while others are highly independent. All experiences are valid and deserving of respect.
Autism and Strengths
Many autistic people bring exceptional creativity, problem-solving abilities, and unique perspectives to their communities. At Healing Spaces, we focus on celebrating these strengths while providing support for areas of challenge.
