January is supposed to feel like a reset- what happened!?

Instead of a reset and boost of energy, many people feel tired in a way that sleep doesn’t touch. Deep fatigue in your bones and emotions that feel close to the surface. Motivation disappears, New Years Resolutions quickly slip into the “archived” folder in our minds and small things take more effort than we think they ought to.

Welcome to January. You are not alone.

After “Getting Through,” There’s a Drop

For weeks — sometimes months — we can all double down, overcompensate, overextend and run on “get through it” energy.

Holidays. Social expectations. Family dynamics. Deadlines. Financial stress. Caregiving. Masking. Holding things together. Sensory Overload.

Suddenly, all the pressure stops. We reintegrate back into regular life, routine, taking out the garbage and our body exhales. Our system settles back down and we feel all that we haven’t felt since we have been running.

This is usually when exhaustion shows up. Or sadness. Or irritability. Or numbness. Sometimes all of it at once.

January Needs Gentleness

Instead of forcing motivation or optimism right now, can you allow your authentic experience to take up space without judgement? Can you allow space for your system to be? Consider:

  • What feels doable today?
  • What would make this hour slightly easier?
  • What can stay simple?

Here are a few micro-actions we often suggest in January —just as options:

1. Shrink the Day

Fatigue drags us down. Healing rest lifts us up. Many people experience winter fatigue or even seasonal affective disorder (SAD), which can feel heavy and isolating. The difference is that when we intentionally create moments of rest—whether that’s a walk under a pale winter sky, journaling by candlelight, or simply choosing an early bedtime—we are choosing to align with our body’s need for restoration, rather than fighting it.

This small shift can move us from “I’m failing because I’m tired” into “I’m listening to my body’s wisdom.”

Instead of planning the whole day, plan one small anchor:

  • a short walk
  • a warm drink in silence
  • one email, not ten
  • Watch the birds (that’s my personal favourite!)

Let that be enough.

2. Lower the Bar on “Productive”

January isn’t the time for overhauls.
Doing the basics — eating, resting, showing up — counts.

If all you did today was keep yourself going, that matters.

3. Choose Soft Structure

Gentle rhythms can help without overwhelming:

  • waking up at roughly the same time
  • stepping outside once a day – fresh air on the face is a beautiful thing!
  • eating something nourishing regularly

Think supportive, not strict.

4. Borrow Regulation

Connection helps nervous systems settle.
This might be a trusted person, a familiar show, music, time with a pet, or simply being around others without having to engage much.

Think about what grounds you and see if you can access it.

Understanding Your Nervous System

Sometimes, simply knowing why your body is reacting this way can make the weight feel a little lighter. If you’re curious about the mechanics of burnout, trauma, or how neurodivergence plays into your energy levels, we’ve created a library of free, grounded resources. They are designed to help you make sense of your experience at your own pace.

Support Is Allowed — Even When You’re “Managing”

You don’t need to be in a crisis to deserve support. Often, January isn’t asking us for reinvention; it’s asking for care and a soft place to land. If you feel like you need help holding what’s heavy right now, we’re here.

Healing Spaces provides trauma-informed, neuroaffirming counselling tailored to your unique system—in person at our Vancouver and North Shore offices, or via virtual counselling across British Columbia. If you’re ready to see if we’re the right fit for you, we invite you to request a free initial consult.
